Sean Mark Mateo, Counseling Student Intern

Sean is a currently a graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he also earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in neuroscience.

Sean takes a humanistic, person-centered approach to counseling. He strives to create a genuine, empathetic, and nonjudgmental environment grounded in unconditional positive regard. He values client autonomy and believes that clients are the experts on their own experiences. Through conversation, active listening, and thoughtful feedback, he helps clients explore their experiences and develop greater insight into themselves. Sean emphasizes the importance of identity and recognizes how the different parts of who we are, as well as our environments, shape our experiences in complex ways. As a gay, aroace, Filipino American man, he is particularly passionate about serving LGBTQ+ individuals and members of diverse and historically underserved communities. He is committed to increasing the accessibility and cultural responsiveness of mental health services. His clinical interests include affirmative therapy, dissociation, trauma, life transitions, relationships, anxiety, and depression.

 

Outside of counseling, Sean enjoys spending time with friends, trying new restaurants, visiting parks, hiking, taking road trips and night drives, listening to music, singing karaoke, and having meaningful conversations. He has helped organize meetups and community events while also valuing time alone at home. Sean appreciates creative expression, particularly art and photography, and welcomes clients’ interests, passions, and creativity.

Sean accepts Clark County Victims of Crime Reimbursement. His cash rate is $40/50-minute session.
